Meanwhile Irene had a job as a comptometer operator with the National Tyre Service. Compometers were mechanical devices for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividind and as such, were the foreunners of todays calculators. The young couple didn't marry untill '54 and then lived with Irene's mother in Fenham untill Tommy became a caretaker for a block of flats in Shieldfield. By the time Paul was born in '60 they were living in a flat on the thirteenth floor of the Pearl Assurance building on Northumbland Street. Tommy was the caretaker there while Irene had stopped working when she became pregnant.
