It seems likely that Irene returned to Newcastle before the war ended because Tommy, her future husband, came from Newcastle, not Cumbria. He was a year older than she was and was called up to serve in the Coldstream Guards in '44. He was injured and lost the sight in one eye. That injury greatly limited Tommy's job opprtunities when he was demobbed because although he could see, he was unable to judge distance.
